To win, the numbers have to make up a predefined pattern. The winner calls out the word “Bingo” to indicate that they have won. The game of bingo originated in Italy in 1530, as a state run lottery game known as Lo Guico de Lotto. In the late 1700’s, Le Lotto, as it was known, was played in France and took a form that is similar to today’s bingo games. It featured playing cards, tokens, and numbers read aloud. To this day, the original version of the game is still played in Italy on Saturdays, and the bingo games can be found almost everywhere else, including in person and on the Internet.
Many American schools have students play bingo games as an instructional tool. It is also used to teach English in other countries. Germany began using bingo games for educational purposes in the 1800s for teaching children how to spell, learn animal names, and memorize multiplication tables.
