There are some opening moves that are popular for a reason...More than that, the game of checkers is a game of patterns. Some patterns can be used to force your opponent to move a certain way, some can be used to prevent your opponent from moving a certain way, some can be used to force you opponent to jump you, and so forth. For instance you can manipulate how the peices are moved across the board, by moving your peices in tight groups. If you do it right, you can move towards the opposite side of the board, with less of a risk of being jumped, forcing them to move around you, and force the other person to spread out their peices Games that look a lot like checkers were popular as long ago as 1500 B.C. At Thebes, a wall painting apparently showed Ramses III playing an early form of checkers with a lady. There are actually many variations of checkers. Most people in the United States are probably familiar with straight checkers, also known as English draughts. Men move and jump forward only. Kings move and jump forward and backward. This is true of Italian checkers as well, but in Italian checkers men may not jump kings. In Russian, international and Canadian checkers, the latter two played on larger boards, men jump forward or backward, just as a king in straight and Italian checkers. Also in these four variations, kings cross the board in one move, whether jumping or making a simple move. In Spanish checkers men move and jump forward only, but kings cross the board in one move, so this variation is, so to speak, halfway between the other two types. Experts study classic "strokes," or long series of forced jumps, which include the Goose Walk, Wyllie's Switcher Winder, the Boomerang, and even the dreaded 350-year-old Canalejas Cannonball.
