Family Board Games from Direct-Source Games
When playing a game of checkers, it is important to realize the strategy of how the game is being played. The more chances you have to not be jumped, the better the advantage you have.
The many potential patterns in checkers games are important. Many people that play checkers will start with specific moves for a reason; most likely to give them an advantage to jump the opponents’ pieces or avoid having their own lost. There are patterns that will force the opponent to make their next move a certain way, or prevent them from doing so. In certain cases, it may even be advantageous to have the opponent jump you at the right time.
You can move pieces in a checkers game into groups, each time moving one towards a batch of others. In keeping them together and moving toward the opposite side of the board, this minimizes the chance that you’ll be jumped. Having the opponent spread out their pieces and move around yours gives you a better chance at eliminating their pieces and winning the game.
Checkers board games, and similar games, have been around for a long time. Wall paintings from ancient Egypt show Ramses III playing a form of checkers, and evidence exists that people would play checkers or games similar to it as far back as 1500 B.C.
Straight checkers, commonly known as English Draughts, is the most popular version of this type of vintage board games in the United States. It is also one of the most traditional and fun of all family board games. In this checkers game, players can only move and jump men forward, while kings can be moved forward and backward. Italian style is played in a similar way, but in contrast to the straight version, men cannot jump kings. Russian, International, and Canadian checkers are played on larger boards. Men can jump both forward and backward. Also, a king can cross the board in a single move.
Another version is a Spanish variation in which men move and jump only forward, and kings cross the board in a single move. This is a cross between the other types of the checkers games.
Many different variations exist of the basic checkers board games. Chinese checkers is arranged in a star pattern with all the playing pieces starting off at the edges of the star. Tick Tac Toe is considered to be type of checkers play, as well as Connect 4, where pieces are slid into a vertical plastic board to match 4 of the same color in a row or diagonally. The latter is a great choice for family board games nights as it is very popular among kids.
Various styles of checkers exist too. Lavish wooden checkers sets can fit in well with vintage furniture and other vintage board games in your collection, but the checkers are also easily played on folding boards, magnetic sets, and on small travel kits.
