Italian style is played in a similar way, but in contrast to the straight version, men cannot jump kings. Russian, International, and Canadian checkers are played on larger boards. Men can jump both forward and backward. Also, a king can cross the board in a single move. Another version is a Spanish variation in which men move and jump only forward, and kings cross the board in a single move. This is a cross between the other types of the game. Many different variations exist of the basic checkers game. Chinese checkers is arranged in a star pattern with all the playing pieces starting off at the edges of the star. Tick Tac Toe is considered to be a way to play checkers, as well as Connect 4, where pieces are slid into a vertical plastic board to match 4 of the same color in a row or diagonally. The latter is very popular among kids. Various styles exist too. Lavish wooden checkers sets can fit in well with vintage furniture, but the game is also easily played on folding boards, magnetic sets, and on small travel kits.
