Chess Men

In the game of chess each player receives a set of sixteen Chess Men. One set is light in color, for the white side. The other is dark in color for the black side. Eight men in each set are of the lowest grade, and are named pawns. The other eight are of various grades, and are called pieces. The pieces in each set consist of a king, a queen, two bishops, two knights, and two rooks or castles.

How the chess men compare in value

The pawns may each be said to have the value of one. The pieces have values of about three for for a bishop or a knight, five for a rook, and nine for a queen. The knight and the bishop are usually known as minor pieces. The value of a piece also depends on it's ability to move. Thus a bishop is usually stronger than a knight, because he can reach distant points faster. But the knight is stronger in game endings in which the pawns are blocked, and his player's pawns cannot be attacked by a bishop.
