Dominoes

Suprisingly little seems to be known about the early history of dominoes dominoes. There are no references to them in Western Literature before the middle of the 18th century, when domino games were first played in Italy and France. Later they spread over Europe and to England and America.

Domino games have been played by kings and presidents. The oldest known domino set was found in Tutankhamen's tomb, among the ruins of Thebes. Tutankhamen was king of ancient Egypt in the 18th dynasty, 1355 BC. The se is now in King Tutankhamen's Museum, Cairo, Egypt. According to historians, a Chinese set, with 32 pieces, existed in the year 1120 AD. President Lyndon B. Johnson was a devotee of dominoes and played with friends in Texas. Interestingly, American Eskimos also play a game using tiles that are very similar to Dominoes. This may make one wonder if the game doesn't date from before the last eastern migration across the land bridge to the Americas.

Many of the games we associate with dominoes are quite modern. The block games seem to be the oldest of the European games, while muggins, also known as five up dates from the early 20th century.

Chickenfoot is a fascinating game for all ages. It features special dominoes with brightly colored pips, a "hub", and abundant fun for all ages.

The object of the game is to play all your tiles and have the lowest score at the end of the game. At the start of the game, each player draws tiles from the "chicken yard", one tile at a time. The first player to hold the double-nine tile goes first, positioning the tile in the center of the hub, then play proceeds clockwise. The remaining tiles that contain double nines are then played into the other notches on the hub, forming a double "chicken foot". Thereafter, tiles may be placed on any of the six "chickentoes", and so on. Chickenfoot can also be played with double twelve dominoes.

MEXICAN TRAIN DOMINOES

Mexican Train is a modern version of Dominoes, played with 91 double-twelve dominoes. Up to eight players may participate. A unique feature of Mexican Train is the little "trains" used for game markers. These may be any sort of marker (such as a bead, button, or coin), but the game's more fun if you use actual toy trains.

The object of the game is to discard all your dominoes. You discard onto your own train, onto the Mexican train, onto other trains at the station, or onto other players trains.

Mexican Train is a fun variation of dominoes, and a great party game. Make sure to have enough dominoes and plenty of the little trains on hand!
